5 days post amputation

I’ll start by saying I am an LVT and knew something was wrong when my husband called and said Howard was limping very bad and thought he should bring him to my work. He had been limping on and off for months but radiographs were normal 5 months prior. But this day was different. He has some swelling at the left elbow and very bad limp. At first glance the radiographs looked normal but when compared to the previous ones there were some changes. We visited the orthopedic surgeon and he was concerned with the changes seen and pain in the distal humerus. CT scan confirmed our biggest fear. But we were told to check out this site and it gave me comfort to here the stories and move forward with his amputation and if needed maybe chemo after. He has been doing well. Even jumped up on the couch yesterday. Today was a bit tougher but since stopping his opioids as directed he seems to be better. Praying for a good outcome with our histopatholgy, he is such a great boy and has not had an easy life as far as Medicare issues go. He has pemphigus vasculitis and is a MRSP carrier. Also hypothyroid as well!!! But never once growled or snapped at anyone, just a gentle big soul.

Howard is our 10 yr old big mutt ( prior to amputation he was 106lbs). He had his left front leg amputated on 8/15/18 and we are currently waiting on pathology results

  1. Wow Howard scored when he found you for pawrents! Good job with caring for him through recovery!

I have no idea what “pemphigus vasculitis” or “MSRP” is, and I’m betting we are going to learn a lot from a knowledgeable vet nurse like yourself. Thanks for joining us, we look forward to hearing more about Howard and his life on three legs. best wishes to you you both!

  2. Thank you. We go for his 2 week recheck tomorrow and he starts PT Thursday. I’m hoping he also get the histopath results then so I can see if chemo will be an option for him
